In Mzimba, only 21% of households with children aged 6-24 months consume animal-source foods, and the percentage of women of childbearing age consuming animal-source foods is 31% (KAP Survey 2022). Moved with this background, on 3 rd March, 2026, Centre for Holistic Inclusion in Social Milestones (CHISOMO), a local Non-Governmental Organization in Malawi, in partnership with Donega friends from Ireland, donated a startup package of 10 goats to beneficiaries in Chipekenya village.

Chipekenya Village, Mzimba, Malawi: A Model Village
Apart from diversifying dietary intake, goats will secondly be a source of manure, which will be applied to heavily degraded soils in the village(Participatory Rural Appraisal report, Chipekenya village, 2023). Lastly, goats will act as a source of income, yielding tangible nutrition, economic, and environmental benefits in the target catchment area, thus making significant contributions towards strengthening resilience. This is in line with Malawi Vision 2063 (Mw2063), which stresses the importance of investing in nutrition to support the country’s human capital development as well as ensure an inclusive and self-reliant economy by 2063. In order to sustain this initiative, a pass-on implementation model has been adopted.
