Chisomo is located in the remote rural area of Likhubula in the Mulanje district in southern Malawi. Chisomo currently supports 41 children within Likhubula and with the help of your donations Chisomo plans to expand their support network to include the neighbouring village of Mlela.
Likhubula is surrounded by Mulanje Mountain, central Africa’s highest peak. Likhubula suffers from a high level of unemployment, with Mulanje Mountain providing one of the only sources of seasonal employment. However, there is currently not enough tourism in the area to support the growing number of people looking for employment on the Mountain. Subsistence farming is practiced widely across the Mulanje district by families trying to support themselves. However, subsistence farmers are among the people most vulnerable to current climate variability with a poor harvest in 2019 leading to widespread hunger across the region.
