Communities in the area of Group Village Headman Chipekenya under Traditional Authority Mtwalo have hailed Centre for Holistic Inclusion in Social Milestone Organisation (CHISOMO) for continued support in enhancing nutrition in the area.
Speaking on Friday when the organisation distributed 85 50kg bags of yellow sweet potato vines to 85 households, one of the beneficiaries, Moses Chawinga, said the potatoes will help their families have access to nutritious meals.
“As a community, we are short of words for the support rendered to us by the organisation. Last year they distributed 70 chicks to 10 households which are on pass-on programme, and now they have brought us these vines; we are grateful,” said Chipeta, who assured on behalf of other beneficiaries that they will care for the variety and multiply it.
Salome Luhanga, a member of the organisation’s Board of Trustees, said distribution of the vines is in accordance with its vision of ensuring food sufficient and nutrition enhanced households in rural areas.
“We are distributing these vines because we know they are a good source of Vitamin A, which is a vital nutrient in the body.
We hope that more households will benefit as we are encouraging beneficiaries to multiply the vines and sell some for generating income for their households,” said Luhanga.
Mzimba North District Agriculture Office’s Crops Officer Mwiza Munthali said the vines will cover an estimated space of between 5-7 hectares.
“As an office, we are already encouraging households to consume sweet yellow potatoes, so for the organisation to distribute the same, is a welcome development.
“As an office, we appreciate the role played by our stakeholders in supporting farmers with resources like the vines,” said Munthali.
