CHISOMO donates 70 Black Australorps chicks to clubs in Mzimba

Mzimba North, District Agriculture Office has applauded Center for Holistic Inclusion for Social Milestone (CHISOMO) for providing 10 households in the area of Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba with 70 Black Australorps chicks in enhancing small stock raring culture in the district.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony of the chicks, member of Board of Trustees of Chisomo, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) based in Mzuzu City, Wellings Munthali said the support comes as part of the organization’s vision in promoting healthy eating habits by taking balanced diet.

"We noted that in most communities’ access to animal meet for food is still a big challenge, hence the donation so that they have readily available meat sources from poultry.
We have, therefore given these chicks to ten farmers who belong to Wanangwa Club at Endlongoleni Club in the district with the aim of boosting consumption of animal source food,” said Munthali.

He urged the clubs to incorporate youths and people with disabilities for them to have access to such interventions.
Animal Health and Livestock Development Officer for Mzimba North, Racheal Kaunda, applauded the organization for the intervention, saying it will build on nutrition interventions which were already introduced to the community by other partners.
"This initiative will sustain innovations they previously learnt through nutrition interventions projects such as Afikepo which phased out.
Our expectation is that the beneficiaries will take care of the chickens so that they can be passed on to other members of the community," said Kaunda.
One of the beneficiaries, Loness Phiri, said she will embark on a serious poultry farming using the donation as starter-up capital for her household to be consuming six food groups.
"It is true that we are encouraged to practice healthy eating habits, however access to animal source food has been a challenge though some households have livestock such as cattle, it is not possible for them to slaughter them just for food,” Phiri said.
